On February 10, 2011, the California Supreme Court issued its opinion in Pineda v. Williams-Sonoma Stores, Inc., holding unanimously that a ZIP code is “personal identification information” under California Civil Code Section 1747.08(b). As a result, California retailers who request and record a customer’s ZIP code in the course of a credit card transaction violate the Song-Beverly Credit Card Act of 1971.
