Embracing the “Supporting Our Communities” pillar of Winston for Good, our London office recently hosted two 17-year-old students during the school vacation week of February 18-22. The office partnered with Access Aspiration to identify students for the work experience placement. Access Aspiration, which aims to increase social mobility by providing access to employability training and aspirational work placements, delivers charitable activity on behalf of Mayor’s Fund for London.
More than 100 students responded to our placement request, and Jameel and Fahad were the lucky two who were chosen. They were involved in a variety of tasks during the week, from learning how to draft a legal document and cover letter to reviewing recent court judgments and learning about the structure of a corporate law firm. At the end of the week, each student prepared an exceptional presentation about Winston and what they learned during the week and delivered it to London team members.
Work experience week gave Jameel and Fahad an idea of what life is like in a corporate environment, including an overview of the teams that come together and the types of tasks they carry out that make Winston work. They also gained valuable skills to begin building their résumés and personal statements for their college applications.
The two students remarked on how the people who work at Winston are like a “family” and expressed how much they enjoyed their five days with us.
“Winston & Strawn has cemented[sic] my ambitions of becoming a lawyer, showing me the ins and outs of the profession….”
“Very useful, the best experience; it showed me a lot of things and opened up my eyes to the legal profession. The work and what I learned will be extremely useful for me when I go to university” and “My confidence to start a career has improved a great deal.”
Partner Dan Meagher; Trainees Kata Szeidovitz and Marie Becker; Regional Business Development Manager Ed Bannell; and other firm members in the London office dedicated their time for this worthwhile program, which will be repeated in the fall with other 16-to 18-year-old students who are aspiring professionals.
