New York Attorneys Connect Transgender Community to Pro Bono Legal Services
September 9, 2019
A huge gap in access to justice exists in New York City, and Winston has welcomed opportunities to educate all types of community and non-profit organizations about the pro bono services our attorneys can provide to low-income individuals.
One of our signature efforts is the Name Change Project, which Winston spearheads in partnership with the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund. The Name Change Project, which has had a life-changing impact for members of the transgender community, supports transgender individuals in the intimidating process of seeking a legal name change.
On September 9, Corporate Partner Bryan Goldstein and Pro Bono Counsel Tara Moss gave a presentation on the success of the Name Change Project to a room full of directors, managers, social workers, and caseworkers at the NYC headquarters of a national health care non-profit.
Bryan, a member of Winston’s Pro Bono Committee, ignited interest in this project by bringing attention to the severe strain that today’s political environment has put on NYC’s transgender community. Tara provided an overview of the firm’s robust pro bono program. The team engaged attendees in a lively discussion about ways they can connect their clients to the pro bono legal services available at Winston.
Bryan, together with other Winston New York attorneys, have been passionate about their work with the Name Change Project and have already helped over a dozen clients legally change their names and start new lives. We are proud of our New York attorneys for taking on this impactful initiative, and for Bryan’s leadership in seeking innovative solutions that provide access to justice to more members of the NYC community.
