Partner Nicholas Rodriquez’s Journey from his Native Colombia to a Top Miami Corporate Attorney Featured in Bloomberg Law

Winston & Strawn’s Nicholas Rodriquez is a corporate lawyer in the firm’s Miami office where he devotes his practice to mergers and acquisitions and cross-border dealmaking. In this wide-ranging Bloomberg Law article, Nick talks about his family, his path to Miami by way of New York, his work on cross-border deals and Miami’s reputation as a sophisticated financial center. He also discusses the impact of Latam dealmaking under a Trump administration and, notably, his passion for helping others.

Nick left New York a decade ago to help set up his prior firm’s office, telling Bloomberg Law that he now spends about 10 days a month in Latin American countries. “The countries where I’ve done a fair amount of work in are Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Paraguay and Central America. On structures, it just depends on where the investor is with their idea or company and whether they need assistance and how new they are to the market.”

Sharing his views on Miami and South Florida, Nick says it has evolved into a sophisticated financial center and a dynamic epicenter encompassing a diverse number of industries. “It’s not just something that’s recent—you’ve seen it expand over the last couple of years. The general attraction for Latin Americans—in addition to the prevalence of Spanish, no state income taxes and the weather—I would say in the last 15, 20, 30 years is that high-net-worth individuals, family offices and private equity investors use Miami or South Florida as a landing point.”

Looking forward, Nick says many affluent Latin American investors may embrace Trump and his policies because of their potential aversion to left-leaning and communist governments in Latin America. In discussing his native Colombia, Nick acknowledges it has its share of issues, but it also has a great story to tell, noting specifically the myriad opportunities in the technology and fintech sectors. “There are many unicorns based in Latin America and they’re reshaping the market.”

Now a father of three with a thriving legal career, Nick is quick to credit the people who helped him along the way. “There is nothing more meaningful to me and that I’m more passionate about than helping other people. I feel that I am who I am because of the number of individuals in my lifetime who have blessed me, who have helped me, who have extended a helping hand and who have explained things to me.”
