Winston & Strawn partner Tom Melsheimer was featured in a Texas Lawbook article following the recently announced appointment of new Litigation and Transactions Department leaders at the firm. Tom will begin serving as co-chair of the Litigation Department, alongside Linda Coberly, in June 2024. Tom will not scale back his practice when he takes over as co-chair and has stated he believes it is a strength to have a busy litigator and leading trial lawyer managing the group.
In his diverse career, Tom has worked for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, worked as a prosecutor for the U.S. attorney’s office in Dallas, co-founded a litigation boutique, and finally joined Winston as managing partner of the Dallas office in 2017. He has tried a breadth of cases for high profile clients, including Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban in a 2013 insider trading case, and Dr. Nick Nicholson who was the sole acquittal of nine co-defendants in the 2019 Forest Park Medical Center kickback case.
Tom stated that his philosophy has always been to take on the hardest problems for the people that need his help. When asked to expand on this philosophy for leading the litigation group, he stated that he always tries to focus on the people and their satisfaction with what they're doing, how they're doing, and who they're working with. He noted that in its more than 170-year history, Winston has continued to have a great brand as one of the oldest trial firms in the United States and he wants to respect what has been done in the past and build that brand.
“It’s a little bit like you’ve gotten control of a Mercedes dealership. Everybody knows you have great cars. But you want to make sure that you’re doing everything right to keep up that sterling reputation,” Tom said.
When asked about his decision to accept the co-chair position, he stated, “I’ve been at it for a long time. I’ve managed multiple firms here in Dallas. I’ve grown things from nothing to something. And I do feel like I have some insights. I feel like I have something to contribute that I wouldn’t have been able to contribute 20 years ago.”
