Winston Charlotte Hosts Equal Rights Amendment Reception and Panel Discussion
July 12, 2018
On July 12, Winston & Strawn hosted a reception and panel discussion in support of the effort to make North Carolina the 38th and final state necessary to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
Currently, the U.S. Constitution does not guarantee that all the rights it protects are held equally by all citizens without regard to sex. The Equal Rights Amendment would change that. In 2017, Nevada became the 36th state to ratify the ERA. In May, Illinois became the 37th. With one additional state ratification—and one more vote in Congress—our Constitution could finally guarantee equality to all people regardless of sex.
The event included a networking reception and a panel discussion featuring Winston Partners Kobi Kennedy Brinson and Danielle Williams, bill sponsors Senator Floyd B. McKissick, Jr., Representative Carla Cunningham, and Senator Erica D. Smith, and members of the ERA-NC Alliance. We addressed the status of ratification efforts in North Carolina, the practical and legal implications of the ERA, and how individuals can become involved.
