Winston & Strawn Hosts Asia Executive Summits on Patent Litigation

Winston & Strawn co-hosted executive summit discussions on patent litigation at the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) and the valuation of IP portfolios for licensing and settlement negotiations. These sessions took place in Tokyo, Taipei, and Hsinchu throughout the month of April.
Specific topics discussed at the program included:
- ITC strategy for Japanese companies
- Interplay between Japanese & U.S. IP proceedings
- Business impact of patent litigation in the ITC
- Strategic use of inter partes reexamination at the ITC
- ITC trials based on written direct testimony and live cross examination without a jury

- Patent valuation views of Japanese companies
- Economic analysis of patent licensing and settlement
- Demonstration of a patent valuation program
- Keys to success in patent litigation and licensing
Katsuya Tamai, a professor of intellectual property at the University of Tokyo, moderated the Tokyo summit. The program also featured Japanese and U.S. intellectual property experts Judge Mimura Ryoichi, former Intellectual Property High Court Judge, and Randall R. Rader, former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Each speaker brought a unique perspective on patent litigation and licensing before the ITC.
The Taipei seminar was organized by the Cornerstone Intellectual Property Foundation, Transpacific IP Group Limited, Licensing Executives Society Chinese Taipei, the Association of Technology Mangers in Taiwan, Wispro Technology Consulting Corporation, and Wau Yuan Property Appraisal Co., Ltd. Paul Liu, Chairman of Cornerstone Intellectual Property Foundation and Professor Emeritus, National Chengchi University made welcoming remarks.
The Hsinchu seminar was co-hosted by National Chiao Tung University School of Law. The events were held in Taipei on April 13, Hsinchu on April 13, and Tokyo on April 16.
