Tom Melsheimer Named a Finalist for Texas Lawyer’s 2018 Attorney of the Year
July 13, 2018
Dallas Office Managing Partner Tom Melsheimer is one of three finalists for Texas Lawyer’s 2018 Attorney of the Year, part of the publication’s Professional Excellence Awards.
Texas Lawyer’s Attorney of the Year honors the lawyer “who in 2017 had the biggest impact on the law or the Texas legal community.” A selection of Tom’s accomplishments from 2017 follows:
- Presided over the opening of Winston & Strawn’s Dallas office. In less than a year, the office has grown to more than 60 attorneys.
- Co-authored On the Jury Trial: Principles and Practices for Effective Advocacy, a book that spells out the do’s and don’ts of jury selection, witness preparation, opening statements, and jury research. Law.com called the book “wise and funny.” All profits from book sales are being donated to the UNT Dallas College of Law.
- Delivered an “exceptional” victory for client SAP America, Inc. when a Texas federal district court judge granted SAP’s motion for attorneys’ fees under U.S.C. Section 285.
- Argued before the Federal Circuit on behalf of client FFF Enterprises. Within 48 hours, the three-judge panel unanimously affirmed a Patent Trial and Appeal Board decision, which ended a lawsuit in FFF’s favor.
- Led the trial team which secured a jury verdict in a billion-dollar bet-the-company case on behalf of Alixa RX, Golden Gate Senior Care, and private equity firm Fillmore Capital Partners.
Described as “one of the most sought after trial lawyers in the country” by the publishers of The American Lawyer, Tom has tried civil cases involving patents, antitrust, product defects, securities fraud, and False Claims Act violations, and he has tried criminal cases involving bank fraud, public corruption, copyright infringement, and kidnapping.
