Winston & Strawn wrapped up its celebration of Black History Month with an inspiring presentation by Dr. Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., who chairs the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University.
Author of the New York Times bestseller, Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and its Urgent Lessons for Our Own, Dr. Glaude discussed the racial disparities that still plague our nation and were most recently on stark display during the January 6th riot and attack against the U.S. Capitol.
He described how the U.S. is once again at a crossroads, requiring us to choose if we will finally become a multiracial democracy. To achieve this, Dr. Glaude said we must enter into a new social and moral contract and imagine a country without the ugly lie that white people matter more.
When asked how to effect change and maintain hope in the face of racial disparity, he said, “Our task is not to convince others, but to build a better law firm, build a better world. Human beings are disasters and miracles, but if we show up, we have a chance for a miracle.”
