In honor of Women’s History Month, Winston & Strawn hosted an illuminating and inspiring discussion with Eliza Reid, Iceland’s First Lady and author of “Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland’s Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World.”
Sprakkar is an ancient Icelandic word that translates to “outstanding women.” During the pandemic, Eliza interviewed more than 40 sprakkar and her book details what she learned in the process.
During a lively discussion, led by Linda Coberly, Chair of Winston’s Appellate Practice and Co-Chair of the firm’s Women’s Leadership Initiative, Eliza said, “Gender equality is not a zero sum game.” In fact, gender equality uplifts and improves the lives of all genders. Studies show everyone benefits from greater happiness and longer lives in societies with greater gender equality.
Eliza also shared how disorienting and difficult it felt to become known as the spouse of someone else after her husband was elected President of Iceland in 2016. In response, she has forged ahead with her own career and is a co-founder of a writer’s retreat in Iceland that is launching next month.
In closing, Eliza said she hopes her book will inspire people of all genders to realize that they can also make a difference.
This special presentation was sponsored by Winston’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee and the Women’s Leadership Initiative.
