Living the “Education” pillar of Winston for Good, the firm’s corporate social responsibility initiative, London office attorneys volunteered their time to engage 16 young people in a legal workshop on Social Media and the Law. The program was created by Young Citizens, an education charity that facilitates local disadvantaged schools sending students to corporate firms to increase young people’s awareness and understanding of the law, and to give students access to the legal profession.
Winston attorneys used the small-group sessions to review and explain the law surrounding social media. The attorneys spurred discussions around current news stories and, at the end of the event, furthered cross-team debates that enabled the students to consolidate their knowledge of the issues to argue for and against whether offensive social media posts should be restricted. The workshop was a resounding success, with one student commenting, “I really enjoyed the debate and working with the lawyers to help formulate my arguments. It was an amazing experience.”
