Each year, a dedicated team of Winston attorneys and business professionals serve as tutors to a group of 11thgraders attending Thurgood Marshall Academy, a college-prep public charter high school located in the District of Columbia’s Anacostia neighborhood. The high school was founded in 2001 by Georgetown University law students and professors to honor Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall’s legacy of fostering equal opportunity for all.
Winston for Good volunteers meet monthly with the students at Winston’s Washington, D.C. office. Tutor nights start with pizza and the conversation often includes a discussion of how legal principles apply to everyday citizens. The tutors empower the students to think about how to pursue their future goals and how to contribute to a more just society. At the end of the day, all participants walk away with new insights – including the tutors.
The curriculum for Winston’s tutoring program with Thurgood Marshall Academy was developed by partners Caitlin Mandel and Abbe Lowell. The program is led by Mary Panetta, the firm’s Director of Litigation Practice Operations.
