On Saturday, March 8, 2014, Winston Los Angeles associates and staff ran in Public Counsel’s 11th Annual Run for Justice in connection with ASICS LA Marathon and the LA Big 5k. With donations from Los Angeles partners and staff, we raised $1,246 to support Public Counsel’s pro bono efforts.
Winston works on a number of different projects with Public Counsel, which is the largest pro bono law firm in the nation and offers a variety of services to benefit those living in poverty. Through Public Counsel’s adoption project, Winston attorneys have finalized the adoptions of foster care children who have been abused or neglected to help them obtain permanent placement with their families. Our attorneys also provide advocacy services to the parents to ensure that they receive medical cards, developmental services, correct amounts of adoption assistance payments, and other assistance for their children.
Additionally, Winston Los Angeles summer associates participate in the annual Public Counsel CARES (Connecting Angelenos to Resources and Essential Services) advocacy project. The program is designed to help families and individuals navigate the public social service system and access resources to meet their basic needs. This one-day program gives summer associates the chance to learn about government benefits law and advocate on behalf of impoverished persons struggling to obtain emergency food and shelter benefits.
