The Learning Rights Law Center (LRLC) presented Winston’s Los Angeles office with the Valedictorian Award at the conclusion of its inaugural Raising the Bar for Education Challenge on June 30.
Winston and three other law firms participated in this friendly competition, but the real winners are the students and families served by LRLC through its mission to ensure students with disabilities receive a proper education. The four firms came through for LRLC with more than 100 hours of pro bono assistance, hundreds of school supplies, and $35,500 in donations.
The centerpiece of the challenge was LRLC’s Day of Action on June 8, when our Los Angeles attorneys and summer associates provided pro bono intake assistance for LRLC clients. Spurred on by a partner's pledge to dye his goatee, the office raised more than $10,000 to support LRLC’s education mission. For the last leg of the challenge, the office collected piles of pencils, pens, papers, rulers, folders, binders, books, and other school supplies for the low-income students and families served by LRLC.
Associates Jason Campbell and Shawn Obi, Technical Trainer Ray Ivey, Litigation Support Project Manager Candi Smith, Administrative Services Supervisor Tracey Waters, and Pro Bono Counsel Maria Kutnick spearheaded Winston’s participation in this event. Ray, Candi, and Tracey were recognized for their efforts with the LRLC Class President Award.
This outstanding effort by our LA office is a prime example of Winston’s commitment to our core value of community service. Through our Volunteer@Winston program, attorneys and staff across the firm regularly volunteer their time, talent, and energy by partnering with a variety of organizations to help enhance the lives of others.
