Winston Los Angeles Helps Children Improve Literacy Skills and Develop a Love for Reading
Blog
November 6, 2024
Winston’s Los Angeles office is a long-time sponsor of Read to a Child, a nonprofit that pairs elementary school children with volunteer mentors who read aloud to them every week for 30 minutes. Each year, 20+ attorneys and business professionals serve as mentors and read stories to their student mentees.
The Read to a Child program helps close the opportunity gap for students attending under-resourced Title One elementary schools in Los Angeles. Studies show reading aloud to children is a powerful way to help them develop strong reading skills, which are critical for academic and professional success. The strong bond that mentors and mentees form helps motivate the students to engage in more challenging literary activities.
Los Angeles litigator Shawn Obi serves as Los Angeles Board Chair for the organization. Previously, Eva Davis, Winston’s Managing Partner for External Affairs, served as Chair of the organization.
