Chicago-based partner Kimball Anderson and his wife Karen were among a dozen adventurers who took a five-day National Geographic trek this summer from Cuzco, Peru, to Machu Picchu, the famous 15th-century Incan city situated on a mountain ridge above the Sacred Valley.
The trek took them through snow-covered passes as high as 15,500 feet, from which they descended along an ancient Incan trail to Machu Picchu (elevation 8,000 feet). Along the way, they encountered friendly indigenous people, sampled fine Peruvian dishes (including guinea pig and alpaca), and saw everything from tropical forests filled with wild orchids to high alpine glaciers and soaring mountain summits.
During the trek, Kimball was photographed holding the Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) flag in an effort to publicize and raise funds for its mission of affordable access to justice for all. In 2003, Kimball and Karen created the CBF Public Interest Law Fellowship to provide loan repayment assistance to outstanding recent law school graduates working at Chicago-area public interest law organizations.
