Carriers Settle Government Cargo Price-Fixing Claims

On March 7, 2014, the Department of Justice issued a press release announcing that Sea Star Line LLC and Horizon Lines LLC have agreed to resolve claims that they violated the False Claims Act by fixing the price of government-impelled cargoes in the U.S.-Puerto Rico trade. Under the settlement agreements, Sea Star and Horizon agreed to pay $1.9 million and $1.5 million, respectively. The settlement is the latest chapter in Government’s multiyear investigation into price-fixing in the trade, and underscores the additional exposure faced by Federal contractors in price-fixing cases.
