On May 22, 2013, Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and David Vitter (R-LA) introduced S. 1009, a bi-partisan TSCA reform bill known as the Chemical Safety Improvement Act. If passed, the bill would increase EPA's authority to regulate existing chemicals and create additional safety screening requirements for new chemicals. The bill has bi-partisan support from eighteen co-sponsors and has been praised by both the American Chemistry Council and the Environmental Defense Fund. A parallel version of the bill has not yet been introduced in the House of Representatives.
