Winston & Strawn partner Gus Membiela was quoted in a Daily Business Review article discussing Miami’s prominence in the international arbitration space. The American Arbitration Association reported 91 cases seated in Miami in 2023, while New York hosted 121 cases. Many local practitioners see the recent data as a sign that Miami has firmly established itself as a major player in the space.
Gus stated that Winston is committed to growing in Miami, and one of the top attractive growth areas for the firm is arbitration, noting that the rise of Miami’s prominence in the space is also an encouraging sign for the firm’s general prospects in the city as it signals its continually growing relevance within the business community.
One of the specific growth trends Gus said he sees more frequently is how a lot of those arbitration cases are seated in Miami, but apply laws from other jurisdictions.
“This is indicative of Miami’s overall growth because, traditionally, you may have seen more local law maybe in some other jurisdiction seats,” he said. “Here you’re seeing a very broad cross section of applicable law, which is what you traditionally see in New York, London and in some other markets.”
