Winston & Strawn partner Kimball Anderson recently spoke with Crain’s Chicago Business, Fox 32 Chicago, and Chicago Sun-Times about the migrant crisis in Chicago, and pro bono efforts to help migrants wade through the legal process to gain residency and asylum rights. As a sanctuary city, Chicago has welcomed 492 buses from Texas and over 20,000 migrants since August 2022.
“Most of these people appear to have been bused to Chicago for political reasons. Many of them have hearings on their status scheduled elsewhere around the country, in places like Denver, and they are living in Chicago in need of a change in venue along with help in applying for work permits,” Kimball told Crain’s Chicago Business. “Their needs in many cases are basic and elementary.”
With the help of agencies such as the National Immigration Justice Center and other Winston pro bono attorneys, Kimball helped host a series of free legal clinics which served to educate new arrivals on their rights, and guide them on next steps.
“To apply for work permits, to apply for a change of venue – to move their hearings from, let's say, Denver to Chicago. And fundamentally, just to register their whereabouts with the Department of Homeland Security. So they needed to go online basically,” Kimball explained to Fox 32 Chicago.
