Winston & Strawn partners Krishnan Padmanabhan and John Rosenthal discussed the firm’s artificial intelligence strategy group with The American Lawyer. With increased interest from clients and a surge of AI-related cases hitting courts, many firms have begun launching official AI strategy teams. Winston’s AI strategy group, announced in January, includes lawyers and technologists who advise clients on navigating regulations, drafting policies, and managing novel cases presented by AI.
John and Krishnan told The American Lawyer that they’ve been working with AI for a while but felt in January they had their infrastructure in place, both internally and in terms of how they wanted to serve clients. They also said they wanted to take a more long-term approach, in part because the environment is evolving so quickly and because the products are still relatively immature.
“I’ve been around the technology industry long enough. I’ve seen the introduction of transformational change. You see this need to jump in and do things immediately, but what you find is a long-term, more measured approach is more beneficial,” said John.
Krishnan added that a lot of vendors are tying their products to big-name, large language models—those developed by OpenAI or Google, for instance. But they’ve also seen tools developed by upstarts that are equally impressive, he said.
“I don’t think the best solutions are necessarily coming from the deepest pockets. And that requires deeper attention,” he said.
