Winston & Strawn partner Krishnan Padmanabhan was quoted in The American Lawyer discussing whether law firms should buy their generative AI solutions from vendors or build them internally. Of the 41 Am Law 100 firms interviewed by The American Lawyer, all are working with tools built by third-party vendors, but some are supplementing these services with their own software development efforts.
Krishnan stated that, serving on the boards of tech companies and providing feedback on tests is a “better way to drive solutions than trying to develop a tool from scratch.”
“Software development is obviously not our core competency,” he said. “We’ve always been conservative about handling client information, and fairly forward-thinking about the use and adoption of technology, but it’s still not our core competency. So it’s better to think about helping the people who are focused on these tools and drive them to help meet our needs.”
