Linda Coberly Appears on Democracy Now! to Discuss the First Senate Hearing in 40 Years for the Equal Rights Amendment
February 28, 2023
Winston & Strawn Partner Linda Coberly was featured this week in an interview on the national PBS program Democracy Now!, where she discussed the significance of the first Senate hearing for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in 40 years and the century-long fight to enshrine sex equality in the U.S. Constitution. Linda serves as Chair of the ERA Coalition’s Legal Task Force and leads the firm’s pro bono work in support of the ERA. As she explains, the ERA has now satisfied all constitutional requirements for an amendment, having been ratified by three-quarters of the states—including Nevada in 2017, Illinois in 2018, and Virginia in 2020. The Senate is considering bipartisan legislation that would recognize the ERA as valid today, notwithstanding a 7-year time limit for ratification contained in the preamble of the 1972 resolution proposing the ERA and the efforts by a handful of states to rescind their prior ratifications.
