Winston Attorneys Maureen Rurka and Kathi Vidal recently spoke with Managing IP about how the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg inspired generations of women in IP.
Kathi discussed how Ginsburg’s dissents and the extent to which she valued dissenting stood out to her. “By virtue of dissenting, she felt like she kept the majority honest, and to me that’s a huge role that she played,” she said.
Maureen said that Ginsburg’s collegiality was the trait she found most inspirational and influential in the justice. She also noted that Ginsburg not only engendered respect despite differences of opinion, but gave back respect. “The ability to not turn policy disagreements into personal ones and to understand what the other side is arguing is not only important for a lawyer but critically important for a judge,” she said.
