Monique Ngo-Bonnici and Jason Campbell to Discuss Lingering Labor Code Landmines at PIHRA California HR Conference
September 1, 2015
Los Angeles-based Labor and Employment Partner Monique Ngo-Bonnici and Associate Jason Campbell co-presented “Lingering Labor Code Landmines” at the PIHRA California HR Conference in Anaheim on September 1, 2015. Winston & Strawn sponsored the conference.
The California Labor Code is a minefield for California employers, and even seasoned HR professionals have to keep a trained eye on its ever-evolving requirements. Policies that were once air-tight can “blow up” whenever the law changes, leaving employers unnecessarily exposed to costly legal liability. Attendees learned an arsenal of proactive steps they can take to mitigate the risk of employment litigation in California’s ever-changing legal landscape.
Ms. Ngo-Bonnici and Mr. Campbell discussed the top ten evolving landmines that California employers can and must avoid to remain successful, including:
- Failing to give employees sick leave
- Basing employment decisions on social media activity
- Misclassifying workers as exempt from overtime
- Withholding wages or other compensation when employees don’t return company property
- Giving employees “comp time” instead of paying overtime
