Winston & Strawn partner Richard Weber was quoted in a Cryptonews article discussing Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive currently imprisoned in Nigeria. Gambaryan was detained in late February 2024 on tax evasion and money laundering charges after traveling to Nigeria for policy talks regarding digital assets. In the article, Richard described the harsh conditions Gambaryan faces at Kuje prison, where he is detained alongside dangerous criminals and terrorists.
“It’s a prison that holds really bad people, including terrorists, and here we have a former law enforcement official and dedicated public servant who is working at a crypto company as a mid-level employee… who is trying to resolve a compliance issue – who then gets arrested and thrown into the same facility,” he said.
Richard emphasized that Gambaryan has been wrongly accused and unjustly imprisoned, highlighting the lack of evidence against him. He urged the U.S. government to take action to secure Gambaryan’s release to his family in California.
Winston is proudly representing the Armenian Bar Association as pro bono counsel in their efforts to secure Gambaryan’s release.
