January 27, 2025
On January 27, 2025, at SIGA Europe’s FITS (Financial Integrity and Transparency in Sport) 2025 Forum in Lisbon, Portugal, Winston & Strawn partner Richard Weber was recognized with the SIGA Anti-Corruption Award for his pivotal role in leading the 2015 FIFA investigations. The investigations, which sparked the well-known FIFAGate case, took place during Richard’s tenure as Chief of Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI). The SIGA Anti-Corruption Award is the organization’s highest recognition for outstanding contributions to the fight against corruption in sports.
In addition to receiving the award, Richard was a keynote speaker at the forum, discussing the implications of FIFAGate—which exposed bribery, money laundering, and other financial crimes in the football world—10 years later. Richard was joined by SIGA Global CEO Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros for a one-on-one conversation focused on the achievements and persistent challenges on the path to honesty in sports.
