Tom Fitzgerald Discusses Winston & Strawn’s Lateral Hiring Strategy with The American Lawyer

Winston & Strawn’s Chairman, Tom Fitzgerald, spoke with The American Lawyer about the firm’s continued success when integrating lateral hires. 

Tom highlighted the importance of immediate integration to the firm, as well as staying involved and supportive so the partner is able to maximize their potential—and talked about how to handle the situation if they are not.

According to Tom, “We want to hire partners who will become enmeshed in every part of the firm. Immersive onboarding makes them more successful, it makes the firm more successful, and it fosters loyalty—an incredibly effective retention tool.” He explained that comprehensive support from staffers across the firm, including paying attention to the small things—like helping a lateral hire set up a new computer—make all the difference. “The [staff] really invoke confidence in the laterals, that we bring so much support and attention to them,” he added.
