Winston & Strawn and PETA File Emergency Motion to Stop Waccatee Animal Evacuation
September 14, 2022
Winston & Strawn and pro bono client PETA filed an emergency motion following new eyewitness reports alleging that Waccatee Zoological Farm is moving animals out of the facility, hindering PETA’s ability to collect evidence concerning the animals’ conditions. The emergency motion, filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, is “seeking a court order that prohibits further transfers, requires Waccatee to account for the whereabouts and ownership history of the animals, and imposes sanctions against the notorious outfit.”
PETA’s lawsuit against Waccatee Zoological Farm under the federal Endangered Species Act and South Carolina’s public nuisance law alleges that Waccatee has failed to provide proper veterinary care to it’s over 460 animals, among other issues.
The Winston & Strawn team working on this matter includes Partner Jonathan Brightbill, Of Counsel Stacie Knight, and Associates Kyllan Gilmore and Sharon Lin.
