Winston & Strawn Pro Bono Team Volunteer Legal Services to People Impacted by California Wildfires
November 4, 2020
Winston & Strawn Pro Bono Counsel Maria Kutnick and Associate James Lin recently signed up to be Legal First Responders for the Disaster Legal Assistance Collaborative, an organization that provides free legal services to those effected by the devastating wildfires ravaging California.
Legal First Responders’ primary responsibility is to staff hotlines and answer questions online for communities, individuals, and businesses directly impacted by the wildfires. This includes a wide scope of topics from immediate landlord-tenant inquiries and how to replace legal documents, to questions regarding foreclosures and bankruptcies months or years after a fire.
Since the beginning of 2020, California’s wildfires have burnt over 4 million acres of land. This includes 31 confirmed fatalities and over 10,000 structures that were damaged or destroyed. As of October 27, 23 fires are currently spreading throughout the state.
