Winston & Strawn secured three Law360 Practice Group of the Year awards in 2024 for Competition, Securities, and Sports & Betting. This annual accolade series “honors the attorney teams behind litigation wins and significant transaction work that resonated throughout the legal industry this past year.”
Competition
Winston’s Antitrust/Competition Practice delivered many impactful wins for clients in 2024 that secured their spot on this year’s list of honorees. Among other notable matters, Winston delivered a victory for Hawaiian Electric in a long-running dispute with Hu Honua Bioenergy, over Hu Honua’s inability to sell wholesale power on the island of Hawaii, after parachuting into the case as replacement counsel.
Securities
Winston’s Securities Litigation Practice was recognized for an outstanding year of wins and influential matters, including securing a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court (USSC) victory for Macquarie and its former officers and directors in a federal securities class action related to a US$2B stock drop. The ruling, which resolves a long-standing conflict among federal circuits, clarified that silence does not equal fraud, even if SEC regulations require disclosure.
Sports & Betting
This is the fifth consecutive year that Winston’s Sports Practice has been recognized as a Law360 Practice Group of the Year. Among other accomplishments, the team secured a $2.75B settlement—among the largest antitrust settlements in history—in back-damages to current/former college athletes, and billions for current/future athletes, allowing them to share the revenue they generate ($20M+ per school, per year). Following a 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court victory (Alston v. NCAA), our team filed three class actions against the NCAA and “Power 5” conferences (House, Hubbard, Carter)—defendants agreed to settle all three, which are pending final approval before the district court. In addition to securing damages/back pay, the settlements allow college athletes to share in revenue generated by their schools at percentages comparable to the NFL/NBA, transforming the college sports landscape.
