Winston attorneys Juliette Huard Bourgois, Ben Bruton, and Agustin Spotorno recently traveled to Georgetown, Guyana to deliver a four-day training program on international arbitration law and procedure. The training was conducted in collaboration with the International Senior Lawyers Project and was hosted by the Government of Guyana’s Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Legal Affairs as part of the country’s endeavor to modernize its arbitration law and become an arbitration seat for the region and beyond.
The capacity-building program was delivered to 35 participants including lawyers of the Attorney General Chambers, as well as officers of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Maritime Administration Department. It contained various workshops on the practical and legal skills needed during an arbitration procedure and included a mock arbitration hearing led by Winston attorneys. The program also covered issues of sovereign immunity as well as implementation of Guyana’s new Arbitration Act, which is designed to bolster Guyana’s legal capability as a destination for international investment.
