Winston Helps Secure a Safe and Stable Home for Two Neglected and Abused Children
October 22, 2021
Winston & Strawn helped a grandmother receive permanent custody of her two young grandchildren after they became malnourished and were physically abused by their mother who suffers from mental health issues.
After noticing bruises on her grandchildren and other signs of neglect, the grandmother contacted the North Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) and asked staff to conduct a safety assessment. Based on the DSS findings, the grandmother was awarded temporary emergency custody in August 2020.
Seeking to provide a safe and stable home for her grandchildren, the grandmother asked Winston & Strawn to help her obtain permanent custody. Winston attorneys submitted a pretrial memorandum, presented the court with exhibits and examined witnesses during the custody hearing. As a result, the grandmother was granted permanent custody in September 2021.
“This is like a weight lifted off of my shoulders. I feel so relieved,” said the grandmother.
“When the safety of children is at risk, the stakes are exceptionally high. We took this situation very seriously and used all of the legal skills and resources we have to ensure a favorable outcome for the children at the hearing,” said Charlotte Partner Jack Cobb.
The Winston team that worked on this case includes Charlotte Partner Jack Cobb and Associate Stephanie Turner.
