One week before trial, the Texas Department of Correctional Justice (TDCJ) fully capitulated and agreed to grant our client, a Rastafarian, a religious accommodation to wear his hair in locks.
Congratulations to the Winston team that secured this important religious accommodation for our client through their rigorous pre-trial preparations, which included numerous depositions and a resounding win against a summary judgment motion filed by TDCJ.
“This is a great result for our client and sends an important message that TDCJ must follow the law and allow exemptions to accommodate the religious beliefs of inmates or face legal action,” said Ahtoosa Dale, Dallas associate.
“We are gratified that the TDCJ eventually did the right thing and respected our client’s religious beliefs,” added Rex Mann, Dallas partner.
The Winston team that secured this victory for religious freedom and prisoner rights included Ahtoosa Dale, Rex Mann, Dion Robbins, and Austin Saathoff.
