What Is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)?
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an executive agency of the United States under the direct authority of the President of the United States. The EPA’s mission is to protect people and the environment from significant health risks. The EPA is responsible for developing, maintaining, and enforcing environmental regulations and policies, including regulating the manufacturing, processing, distribution, and use of chemicals and other pollutants. EPA enforcement powers include fines, sanctions, and other measures.
The agency also oversees certain programs to promote energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, sustainable growth, air and water quality, and pollution prevention.
