Libby Deshaies
Associate
Libby focuses her practice on litigation and has experience with state and federal appeals, defamation, and product liability claims, among others. She clerked for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and for the Illinois Supreme Court.
Libby represents clients in state and federal courts nationwide in civil trial and appellate matters, with a particular focus on complex commercial, product liability, and defamation matters. She is experienced in all phases of litigation, including case assessment and strategy development, briefing and arguing motions, managing all aspects of discovery in complex litigation, including defending depositions, preparing cases and witnesses for trial, and briefing and arguing appeals.
Libby recently helped manage a large team of associates as part of the team that defended Fox News Network LLC in its high-profile litigation with Dominion Voting. She has counseled several other clients on whether or when to file defamation lawsuits or to use other tools to defend their reputations, brands, and business. Libby is part of the Winston team defending a large aviation company in a series of toxic tort cases brought by flight attendants and pilots, alleging that the design of the bleed-air systems of certain aircraft has caused the cabin air to be contaminated with toxins resulting from heated jet engine and hydraulic oils. She was also a member of teams that argued two appeals before the Illinois Supreme Court during the November 2019 term and secured favorable opinions in both.
Libby maintains an active pro bono practice, representing indigent defendants in criminal appeals and civil rights trials and partnering with local non-profit organizations to address systemic problems with the immigration and asylum system.
Prior to joining Winston, Libby served as a law clerk to Illinois Supreme Court justice Rita B. Garman and Seventh Circuit judge Michael Kanne.

Education
Libby received her B.A. in international studies from American University in 2010. She received her J.D., summa cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign, where she was an administrative editor for the Journal of Law, Technology & Policy, and a member of the Jessup International Moot Court.
