Mike focuses his practice on representing private investment funds in all stages of operations, including fund formation, regulatory compliance, operational matters and small business investment company (SBIC) licensing.
Prior to joining Winston & Strawn, Mike spent several years as a Senior Counsel in the Investment Management Division at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) providing legal advice and policy guidance on Investment Advisers Act and Investment Company Act issues. Prior to his tenure at the SEC, Mike spent nearly ten years in the General Counsel's Office at the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) leading a team of attorneys providing legal guidance on all aspects of the SBIC program, including licensing, operations, regulatory eligibility determinations, funding, examinations, and others. Mike draws on his extensive experience working at the SEC and SBA, along with his prior experience as an attorney at two international law firms, to guide SBICs and other private investment funds through a broad range of regulatory matters.
Mike earned his J.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 2007 where he served as an Editorial Staff Member of the Wake Forest Law Review. He received his B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh in 2004.
